Speak Up

"Movers for Moms" is a national program with Two Men and a Truck moving company. Locally the company collected over 3,000 items by coor-dinating with local schools: Westside Elementary, Turie T. Small Elementary, Ditona Elementary, DeLand High and University High. Mohawk Industries, NYSE:MHK. donated 624 square yards of commercial grade loop carpet ,71 1 I with a retail value exceeding $15,000.00. The carpet in the shelter has not been replaced in over 10 years.

Being generous and creative motivates the students at Calvary Christian Academy in Or-mond Beach. As part of their annual book fair, Janet Gresham, the school librarian accepted the challenge posed by Scholastic to partici-pate in "One for the Books" program. As part of the book fair, each class in the elementary school was challenged to donate arts & crafts supplies for the "Hugs & Loves Children's Center" at the emergency shelter in addition to the gift of books. Thank You!

At the Domestic Abuse Council, Inc. we track lots of statistics for various funding sources, education references and several other reasons. We pulled a few stats so you can see the most recent trends in our community. We compared the first 5 months of this year to the same period last year.

Mark your calendars. Saturday September 15, 2012 join us as we walk down Beach St. in Daytona Beach to raise awareness to pre-vent bullying and domestic abuse.

Rain or shine the walk will start at 8:00AM River-front Park on Beach Street.

This is intended to be a fun walk. Wear your most purple outfit. People of all ages and abili-ties are encouraged to participate. Bring your friendly pets.

LEGAL NEWS

The Florida Association for Women Lawyers (FAWL) established the Leaders in Law designation in 2010 to recognize outstanding women lawyers across the state who have made a significant impact in their communi-ties through their legal service and community activities. This year 26 women were selected for the honor.

Three attorneys who practice law in Volusia County were honored at the FAWL Annual Meeting held in Or-lando on June 22, 2012. They are Elizabeth King, Sylvia Starbuck and Katherine Hurst Miller.

Starbuck, legal counsel for the Domestic Abuse Council of Volusia County Inc. uses her law degree to give a voice to those who are unable to speak for themselves. During her career, she has worked for the Central Flori-da Legal Services as well as the Domestic Abuse Council, where she provides free legal representation to vic-tims and survivors of domestic abuse.
