Domestic Abuse Council, Inc. Raised $1,600 for Domestic Violence in Allstate Foundation’s Purple Purse
Challenge

Earns additional $5,000 in funds from The Allstate Foundation

Daytona Beach, FL 10/6/14 Florida based Domestic Abuse Council, Inc. nonprofit organization participated in Allstate Foundation Purple Purse Challenge, which aims to raise money for domestic violence and financial empowerment services. Domestic Abuse Council, Inc. raised $1,600 in the Challenge and received an additional $5,000 in incentive funds directly from The Allstate Foundation.

The Purple Purse Challenge launched on Sept. 2, 2014 and ended on Oct. 3, 2014. In total, the Challenge raised $2.5 million and The Allstate Foundation contributed nearly $650,000 to participating organizations through incentive funding and direct grants.

The funds raised through the Allstate Foundation Purple Purse Challenge will help make sure survivors in our area get the financial education services they need to break free from violence,” said Cheryl Fuller, CEO of Domestic Abuse Council, Inc. “Thanks to the more than 40 donations received from the Challenge, our organization can provide even more resources to families keeping them safe from abuse

The All state Foundation also offers the following tips to start a conversation with someone you suspect is in an abusive relationship:

Offer support without judgment or criticism. There are a lot of reasons why a victim may stay in an abusive relationship, and many reasons why she may also leave and return to the relationship multiple times. Let her know it's not her fault and that she's not alone.

Don't be afraid to tell her that you're concerned for her safety. Help your friend or family member recognize the abuse while acknowledging that she is in a very difficult and dangerous situation.

Avoid confrontations. There are many reasons why individuals experiencing abuse don't reach out to family and friends. It's important to recognize when she is ready to talk about her experiences while still offering support.

Encourage her to get help.Suggest ways she can get additional support. Help her look into available resources, such as the National Domestic Violence Hotline number (800-799-SAFE) or a local domestic violence agency with specially trained advocates to help her out of the situation.

For more information about the program visit, www.purplepurse.com.

Two sororities at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University joined together to hold an event to raise awareness to prevent intimate partner violence. The members of Sigma Sigma Sigma and Sigma Sigma Rho partnered with the athletic department and held a Purple Out volleyball game, where the five-time Lady Eagles conference champions played Coastal Georgia.

The sororities chose purple because it is the color for domestic violence awareness. Students were encouraged to purchase purple t-shirts that said “Volley Against Violence.” There were bins for food donations too for the Domestic Abuse Council’s Emergency Shelter.

We sold over 130 t-shirts and we are still selling more. It was a great and we hope to make it an annual event. Everybody got really into it, said Paige Sanchez, a senior engineering student at ERAU and the Community Service Chairwoman for Sigma Sigma Sigma.

The sororities recently presented the Domestic Abuse Council, Inc. with a check for $845.00, profit from the t-shirt sales and nearly 100 pounds of food.

It is so important for young people to get involved with this cause since females aged 20-24 are at the greatest risk of non-fatal partner violence. We applaud their social consciousness and know our future is in good hands with these leaders,” Cheryl Fuller, CEO of the Domestic Abuse Council, Inc. said.

Once again, the Domestic Abuse Coun-cil, Inc's. event to raise awareness to prevent bullying and domestic violence was well attend-ed.
The keynote speaker this year was na-tionally recognized Stacey Dougan, a lawyer and pioneer in the field of workplace violence and "Men Stopping Violence." She gave a rousing speech focusing on how domestic violence affects all segments of our population and how collectively we can make an impact on social change by hold-ing perpetrators accountable and not re-victimizing the victim. "We believe there is more awareness in both our local community and across the country. We are happy to see this shift, since we know the only way to end domestic violence is to prevent it," Cheryl Fuller, CEO of the Domestic Abuse council said.
Board of Director members Sherrilee Staudt and Joeretha Hayes were honored for their years of service.

Students from elementary schools to middle schools to high schools to colleges and universities attended in addition to people from cities all over the county. To share in the festivities, there were magicians, face painting, self-defense demonstrations and Daytona Destiny Drum line once again lead the processional.

Speak Now
Two dozen community leaders recently joined staff at the Domestic Abuse Council, Inc. to celebrate the "Raise the Roof" cam-paign. Through a CDBG grant from Vohtsia County, a private foundation donation, gifts from private individuals and in-kind dona-tions from experts in engineering and roofing consultants, the total commercial project cost about $150,000. "Because of the generosity of the professionals, including Dickens & Associates Engineering and ECS Florida who aided us in launching this pro-ject, we saved about $50,000. If they hadn't do-nated their services, we would have had to spend our reserves to complete the roof replacement," Cheryl Fuller CEO for the Domestic Abuse Coun-cil said. In the last two years, shelter bedrooms had to close during torrential rainfall and were untena-ble for those in crisis. Since the roof completion in August, no rooms have closed because of water penetration. In fact in August, the emergency shelter was full, serving 102 different individuals with over 1200 bed-nights.

Quilters-by-the-Sea in Ormond Beach does a lot of community service and makes many items for donations for the local community. One project spear headed by member Sharon Bauman of Flagler Beach was to make a banner for the Domestic Abuse Council, Inc.

Quilting club member Bauman designed the banner and put it altogether. Another club member, Rose Croce did all of the intricate quilting. The quilt stitching is s swirl design that ads to the overall appearance.

“We are in the community for so many events for awareness and professional training and we have not had a banner prior to this.
Madi Apparel, a ladies underwear manufacturing company with headquarters in New Smyrna Beach and Kansas City has donated 15 pair of underpants to the Domestic Abuse Council for residents in shelter. Madi is an acronym for “Make A Difference Intimate Apparel.” For each pair of panties purchased Madi will donate a pair to a woman in a shelter.

The company started selling on-line in August 2014. The panties are made from bamboo because of the long lasting principles of the fabric.

Underpants are the most intimate piece of clothing a woman can wear, so they need to feel special,” Said Molly Ray, the Director of Development for Madi Apparel.

According to Hayley Besheer, the founder and CEO, five nonprofits across the country have been the beneficiaries of donated underwear. The first run produced 3,500 pair of underpants. The panties are durable, soft, hand and machine washable and odor preventing, according to Besheer. She states the panties can be hand washed, air dried overnight and ready to wear the next day.

We want people to think of underwear in a different way. These panties are long-lasting. We call them non-disposable. They are not just wear and tear and throw away.” Besheer said.

People can purchase underwear from their website and can designate their donations to the Domestic Abuse Council, Inc.at www.madiApparel.com.

Through collective efforts we were able to accumulate
over a hundred articles of clothing, a myriad of health products, and plenty of toys for families in need.
We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Domestic Abuse Council, and plan to
continue the supply drive throughout this school year.
“We really enjoyed helping out, and plan to continue in the spring!” Favale said.
To learn more about Domestic Abuse Council go to www.domesticabusecouncil.com.
Speak Up
They came for a chance to be on television. They came because they wanted to take a stand. They came because they thought it would look good on a college application. For whatever reason 16 teenagers joined the Domestic Abuse Council on Saturday November 15, 2014 to make a television commercial for anti-bullying.
Students from University High School, Ormond Beach Middle School, Spruce Creek High School and a home schooled student read their lines and acted their parts to help spread the word that it is time to stop bullying and to stop being silent by-stand ers.
The Domestic Abuse Council received a grant from the General Electric Volunteers Foundation to pro-duce four commercials and a 8-minute short educa-tional video to raise awareness to end bullying.

Speak Out
DAYTONA DERBY LUNCHEON (I FASHION SHOW
The room was packed. Perhaps people came to see the models wear very af-fordable fashions. Maybe they came to see the illustrious emcee, Daytona Beach Police Chief, Michael Chitwood. Perhaps they came to see the Rookie of the Year for the NASCAR truck series Ben Kennedy and score an autograph or two. It is also possible they came because the raffle priz-es were amazing. The first "Daytona Derby" fundraiser to support the Domestic Abuse Coun-cil was a success. No matter their reason, the Palmetto Club in Daytona Beach was packed as guests wore sub-lime derby hats enjoyed live music provided by Gordon Russell and Ann Marwick.
The Florida Atlantic Coast Elfuns recommended the Domestic Abuse Council for this project. The Domestic Abuse Council plans to run the commer-cials locally and distribute them nationally along with the educational video.
The students had the opportunity to be part of a professional production with a green room, cos-tumes and make-up. The local Elfuns chapter was in charge of the props and stage management. Do-mestic Abuse Council staff ran lines and rehearsed with the students while they waited for their turn in front of the camera.
To watch our commercials and educational video go to YouTube and type in: Domestic abuse council stop bullying

They say the color red is actually a stimulant. If you attended our Top That Red Hat luncheon on Febraury 2, then you can attest to the level of energy that was in the Palmetto Club in Daytona Beach. Guests traveled from Volusia, Flagler, Brevard, Seminole and Lake Counties to attend the fun filled red hat competition event. The emcee, Daytona Beach Police Chief, Michael Chitwood kept the guests entertained. And the celebrity judges, Kathy Milthorpe with the LPGA, Michelle Carter-Scott of Embassy of Hope and Visions of Flight and Lt. John Wells of EVAC had a difficult (cont.) time selecting the most outrageous hat. We want to thank our sponsors:

Imagine living in a communal setting, not the romantic hippee experience where you share and share alike, but one in which you seek refuge for safety. An alternative you wish you didn't have to seek. Then, imagine the generosity of strangers. People with no connection to your plight and to the people with intimate memories who thoughtfully gave and gave and gave. The generosity of our community made the holiday season bountiful for those in need. In this small space it is not possible to thank all the individuals and groups who rallied to sup-port the hundreds of peo-ple we have served in the past year. Thank you to the advertising agencies, church groups, attorney groups, cosmetic groups, restaurant chains, muse-ums, girl scouts, sororities, civic groups, social dubs and of course, individuals. Our cup runneth over.

Speak Out

Navigating the labyrinth of government agencies, employment agencies & child care programs can be confusing and exhausting. Through an Emergecny Shelter Grant, the Domestic Abuse Council now has the resources and part-time staff to provide those services to shelter residents. Michelle Allen, the Support Services Case Manager provides emergency shel-ter residents with life-skills services that include employment counseling. Allen helps residents build resumes; she role-plays interviewing skills and assists with on-line job applications. Moreover, she offers assistance with finding permanent housing. Part of her re-sponsiblities include goal setting so the residents can start to become financially independent. Both residents and Allen wish she were available on a full-time basis.

Speak Now

The Domestic Abuse Council received a grant from the Verizon Foundation to create a video and enhance the website to ad-dress preventing teen dating violence and to give teens a confidential resource to answer some of their ques-tions. The Domestic Abuse Council is partner-ing with Father Lopez Catholic High School to produce the video. The high school students will write, act and edit in the 10 minute video which will then be distributed to local high school guidance counselors and posted on the internet. Look for the link on our webiste in the late spring. "This is an awesome opportunity for the stu-dents.We are all thrilled to be able to collab-orate on this level," Derek Daly, TV produc-tion teacher with FLCHS said.

A new Beginning

Upwards of 85% of domestic violence victims witness animal cruelty in the home. More importantly, 48% of domestic violence survivors delay or won't leave their abuser because they don't have a safe place for their pets.

Hush Puppy Haven is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization which provides temporary foster homes for pets of domestic violence survivors while they are in shelter with the Domestic Abuse Council of Volusia County. By doing this, Hush Puppy Haven can help ease the emotional stress and worry of the survivor and the children in the family, knowing their pet will be well-cared for and loved while they begin the healing process, until they can be reunited.

Hush Puppy Haven and the Domestic Abuse Council look forward to bringing more victims of domestic violence and their pets to safety... because no one should have to choose between their own safety and the life of their beloved pet. For more information on Hush Puppy Haven, go to www.hushpuppyhaven.orq
